Carla pic2013

Carla D. Youngblood is a life strategist, speaker, and author of three books. She is an expert at teaching women how to bring order and structure to their lives and build a life in preparation to meet life’s challenges. As a coach she works with women leaders in business and ministry, who need a place where they can share openly, without fear of retribution. As a preacher’s daughter she knows first-hand the necessity for leaders to honestly be able to share their stories. Carla believes that when women are able to care for themselves they are better able to care of others; it is a philosophy she practices daily.

Emotions COVER

Book Excerpt

Emotions of the Mind
Fragile minds exist because we struggle with trying to tell the mind what it already knows. The renewed mind is one that is accepting of the finished work of Christ. The fragility of our minds is necessary to push us to easily embracing the truth of our minds. Part of my own journey to this place of renewal, was being able to keep the process free of struggle. The work was to not give in to my thoughts that were contrary to what was already true about me.
Every day I was tested with thoughts which tried to persuade me to think differently. It meant that when the contrary thoughts came I had to search for another thought to think instead. I spent a lot of time reading Philippians 4:8. I had to allow my thoughts to go to my divine nature’s way of thinking and being. The work was for me to decide to come to a place called rest. We will talk more about this in another chapter.
A wondering mind will think about anything, it is subject to those 60,000 thoughts. I believe we are all just one thought away from victory or defeat depending on what you choose to think. If you want to renew your mind, the thought process must become intentional. You cannot afford to allow the mind to drift into places unguarded. The mind is so powerful, it will create whatever it wants.

The Authors’ Corner

Welcome to The Authors’ Corner.

Take a look at my review for title Breathe Again.

Breathe Again by Adrienne Thompson shows us the power of forgiveness. The protagonist, Maria spends many years as a dutiful daughter until she is rescued. But even after finding love for herself, she can’t fully receive until she lets go of past hurts and forgives. I so enjoyed Breathe Again and found Maria’s character to be relatable. Adrienne provides life lessons in this book worth learning and relearning. I highly recommend, Breathe Again.

Book Synopsis

Ambiance – Loving her husband, building her brand, and being there for her girls are the only things that matter to her. But she’s quickly learning that her love is not enough to build a strong, stable marriage. Surrounded by family, friends and business constituents should be enough; yet, she’s all alone. When her love isn’t enough to suffice her husband’s needs, Ambiance considers stepping beyond the vows and taking matters into her own hands. The tragic results will have her running into the arms of the Lord.
Naomi – As a teen she made the decision to be a single mother. Choosing to build her life around her daughter has molded and shaped all the decisions she has made until now. Her relationship with her daughter is highly valued and nothing can shake it, not even her daughter’s attempts to grow up. But when her daughter’s so-called “deceased” father comes back, Naomi’s carefully constructed world may begin to crumble. Her efforts to protect her child may be the one thing that pushes her away, and she must decide if she will open herself up to love again.
Paige – running from her inner demons she struggles to build a life vastly different than her mother and aunt’s. With a mindset of use or be used, she takes the concept of “love ‘em and leave ‘em” to a new level, and her promiscuous lifestyle is a cause of concern for all those who love her. She doesn’t care whose heart she’s breaking or whose life she’s ruining, it’s all about her. Until it no longer is.
Three women are on a journey of self-discovery, as they deal with the fallout from choices made from emotion rather than self-awareness.

suzette_headshot_cropped

Suzette D. Harrison, a native Californian and the middle of three daughters, grew up in a home where reading was required, not requested. Her literary “career” began in junior high school with the publishing of her poetry. While Mrs. Harrison pays homage to Alex Haley, Gloria Naylor, Alice Walker, Langston Hughes, and Toni Morrison as legends who inspired her creativity, it was Dr. Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings that unleashed her writing. The award-winning author of Taffy is a wife and mother who holds a culinary degree in Pastry & Baking. Mrs. Harrison is busy cooking up her next novel…in between batches of cookies.

On Being Single

Still waters from South Carolina

There was a time in my life when I obsessed over  being alone. My obsession was fueled by the comments of others such as “maybe you’re supposed to be single.”  I set out on a quest to prove them wrong.  But now that has changed. I’ve learned to be content in the state I’m in. (Philippians 4:11)

My journey to contentment began when an acquaintance told me a story of a woman who married her life partner at age 60. At the time she told me that story, I was 53 years old. She went on to liken my situation with the woman in the story. I was infuriated. Her statement caused me such trepidation my mission became to meet, date and marry my intended immediately.

I belabored the topic of my singleness to whomever would listen. Consternation gave my voice a whiny-tone and eventually, the listener’s eyes would glaze over. With each passing year, I became more focused on meeting my goal. One day, however, I began to change. The change came gradually and when I think about it, I’m not sure when it started. I just know, I’m okay now.

Over the past couple of years, I’ve learned to embrace me for who I am. I appreciate my outspokenness coupled with knowing when to remain silent. My gray hair in my eyes is a sign of wisdom and I wear it proudly. When I look in the mirror, I see an intelligent, beautiful, slightly flawed almost 60 year old with much to give this world. In other words, I no longer need to be married to fulfill a void. I am complete in and of myself.

To all my sisters out there; single and married, I wish you the same peace I’ve found. Within us, we possess all we need to make this journey called life an incredible one. No one person can complete us, we have been complete since birth.

Putting Down Roots

This morning, I stood in the middle of the living room floor staring at the bare white walls that surrounded me. Pictures I’d been meaning to hang for the past three years remained stacked neatly in a corner. The same colorless walls were found in every room of my home with the exception of the kitchen, den and half bath.

I’ve lived in my house for over twenty years now, yet I’ve only painted three rooms. How I’ve managed to survive without color for all these years is beyond me. Yet in still, it’s not. Color would mean, I’ve put down roots.

Allow me to pause here and say, my favorite color is red. I find it exciting, vibrant and invigorating. My car is red as are a lot of my clothes. As I stood surveying my bedroom, I couldn’t help but wonder why I hadn’t painted it red. Suddenly, I realized this moment, this epiphany if you will was a turning point for me. I’d grownup north of the Mason-Dixon line and in my heart, I’d never left home. I decided right then and there, it was time.

I have big plans for my house and yard this summer. I’m going to upgrade my appliances, kitchen and bathroom fixtures as well. I’ve already envisioned the oasis of serenity I want for my deck and yard. It’ll be a place I can retreat to in the evenings away from the cares of life. But most importantly, I’m going to head over to the local hardware store and buy some red paint. After all color means I’ve put down roots.

Becoming A Foot Soldier

My bootsFor most of my life, I’ve know I’m called to be a Foot Soldier. We are those at the grassroots of the spiritual war. We go quietly about our work and are seldom in the lime light.

Recently, I had the pleasure of meeting a wonderful husband and wife team who are doing great things in my area. I met them after reading an article on their work in our local online paper. This young couple is working to help the homeless, especially those living in a tent city not far from my home.

After reading the article, I knew I had to get involved. You see, when God places a calling on our lives, He leads us to the exact place He wants us to be. I’ve always had a heart for the homeless and I’m always willing to put my hand to the plow and work in the fields.

I contacted the couple and made arrangements to meet up and drop off some clothing to a few of the people living in the tent city. My heart grieved for them because every night that I go to sleep, I lay down in a bed in a house with a secure roof over my head. I don’t know what it feels like to have no home to go to.

Dropping off clothing and having prayer with persons I met is just the beginning for me. I want to do so much more. Perhaps you have been led to get involved for the Kingdom of God. If so, ask for guidance and when He answers, put your hand to the plow and don’t turn back. This world needs Foot Soldiers now more than ever.

An old man’s side-piece. (I don’t think so)

Rose On Wood BW

The following blog is my thought based solely on an encounter I experienced. It is in no way intended to insult or offend. It is merely my expression of how I was made to feel as a result of the interaction between myself and an older gentleman.

I had an interesting encounter on a train ride a couple weeks ago. I was assigned a seat next to an older gentleman. All seemed to be going well with our ride until he decided to engage me in conversation. The conversation started off fine enough and then, he digressed and began to flirt. Initially, I attempted to divert the conversation to the usual, “how’s the weather” sort of thing. He’d participate for awhile and then would startup with how attractive I was and how much he enjoyed talking with women. After some time, I grew disgusted. I leaned into him and explained that he needed to stay in his lane, if you will.

With my posture as well as my words, I informed him, I was not nor would I ever be interested in him; after all he’d admitted he was married. I’m not quite sure who the women were he was used to entertaining, but believe you me, I’m not the one. First of all he’s married and that alone is a deterrent for me. Secondly, even if he weren’t married, he was too many years my senior. Now, what disturbed me most about our encounter, was this man’s insistence on having what I felt was an inappropriate conversation.

His mannerisms were quite juvenile, almost teenage like, if you will. He would giggle every now and again and start talking about the women he enjoyed talking with as if I was supposed to be impressed. He even suggested we have lunch. As I listened to him jibber-jabber on, I wondered when or if he’d ever realize his behavior was out of line. Here was a man who was obviously in his late 70’s, still attempting to woo women half his age.

I believe what I found most disturbing about my experience with this man, is the fact he admitted he was married, yet obviously found no qualms with seeking my company. He shared that his wife was unwell and I wondered where was his loyalty to her. I could have made the excuse for him in my mind, he was lonely and seeking companionship (bless his heart). However, I’m wise enough to know his behavior was nothing new.

I’m currently single but when the man God has promised to me comes into my life, he’ll know beyond a shadow of doubt, loyalty, trust and honesty are priorities on my relationship list. And that goes for when we’re apart as well as together.
